Isn’t it interesting that one day a year is set aside to honor Motherhood? For myself, some of the most powerful and impressive people I have met in my life have not given birth to a child. I often wonder why we put such emphasis on something which perpetuates the species. LOL, I know some of you are gasping in horror.
Myself, I feel that Motherhood was not the thing I have done best in this lifetime. Often I wonder if I loaned my uterus to beings from another dimension who though I loved, I could never totally understand. While they in fact were ABSOLUTELY Positively SURE WITHOUT A DOUBT they had an alien for a Mother.
So, to those of you who have had a Mother of birth who was much less than you would have hoped. (my own children are included in this) Haven’t there been others there for you who taught you to honor yourself, to grow, to laugh, to expand, that you COULD DO ANYTHING you wished, that you were capable, smart, pretty, brilliant and WONDERFUL?
I call them friends, co-workers, husbands, lovers, spirit guides, and angels in human form. So, on this day I certainly honor the idea of Motherhood, while hoping that you will accept my humble opinion that the term Motherhood is full of HUGE Expectations while many of you had less than Satisfactory experiences with it.
So, Mother : from the Webster Dictionary: 1 to give birth to 2. To Nurture and care for… When you are a friend and honor someone you love, don’t you give birth to that relationship? Don’t you help them to birth self respect and connection to themselves and their talents and abilities? And Don’t we all Nurture and care for animals, The planet, people, whatever?
So…to those of you who have given Birth to a child and are feeling you did not do your best and that you failed, and that you wished you could have done something differently? I offer you a second chance to be a friend to those children if they will let you, to give birth to new relationships constantly and give birth and care for others as well as honoring WHAT YOU DID do … Most of the time none of us are quite as bad as we think we are, and never as good as we wish we were.
For those of you who have not given birth to a child and wish that you could have. I offer you this … You truly are a Mother in the truest sense of the word because of what you give to the world and to others. So, on this Mothers day lets give some attention to those who nurture, love, support and honor us. AND maybe, just maybe? Think about Mothering ourselves in a way which we could not get from our birth family. Although we cannot change the past but we can change our way of seeing and feeling about the past can’t we? AND there is always the option for you to MOTHER those in need isn’t there?
AND to those Mothers out there who are divine and perfect and their children believe so. I take my hat and shoes and Whatever off in HONOR OF you. WOW, you rock, and I send each day out a thank you to a lady in my life who I met At 14 years old. A social worker named Ms Jensen, a maiden lady who told me I could overcome my upbringing, that I could help others and that in doing this I could be much better than I ever thought Possible.
And I give honor to my Mother who birthed me and daily work on recognizing that the events which shaped her were Not the same as what shaped me. My Mother of birth has been a nanny to many children, helped me to raise my children And is a Woman of POWER and who many love and honor….. AND for the first 35 years of my life, someone I whined about because she surely did not fit my idea of a Mother.
And, so maybe I as an ALIEN, was birthed into someone who did not understand me either? I know now at this Age that my family of origin was established for me to learn to want and desire to understand and work with others. That this family was not to give me the shelter and safety which I always thought I wanted, but to give me wings to not only fly …but VERY STRONG wings to be able to help others see they can fly also.
WOW, and haven’t I been Lucky to have Mothering from others, which I understood and which helped me. On this day let us all give THANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE MOTHERED us and give HONOR to ourselves for those who we have MOTHERED in our own ways. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all of you out there and …. THIS DAY IS FOR EVERYONE, not just those Who have given birth to a child isn’t it? So, lets HONOR Everyone
